Lewes Beaches Weather Erosion and Flooding

Posted on September 27, 2023

Tropical Storm Ophelia has come and gone, but many Coastal Beaches are still bracing for high tides, and minor to moderate coastal flooding, tonight. But the wake of the weekend’s storms have already left heavy erosion — and sand spreading, around Lewes Beaches.

The City of Lewes tells WBOC they are already working to restore the beaches as the difficult weather conditions occur. City crews are already working with DNREC to return the sand spread by wind and flooding back to the beaches and off the roads.

Neighbor Matthew Moore says he’s cautiously optimistic –

“I don’t think they’re gonna get the dunes back that well anytime soon. They are [the beaches] always struggling after storms like this and you can already see that in the damage.” said Moore.

The City is expecting a full beach replenishment from the Army Corp of Engineers this upcoming winter, ideally, after the major heavy storms of the season have passed, said Town Manager Anne Marie Townshend.

As for tonight, many neighbors like Tyrone Lowther says he’ll stick to staying inside

“Branches in the road, lots of water, hydroplaning on the road a little bit – I am not going nowhere.” said Wilder.
