Luck Companies expands quarry operations in SC with $450M investment

Posted on January 9, 2025

Luck Companies, a provider of crushed stone aggregates and environmental products, announced plans to expand its quarry operations in South Carolina. The company will develop new sites in Chester, Edgefield, Saluda, and Spartanburg counties while expanding its existing operations in Fairfield and Kershaw counties. The combined investment of $450 million is expected to create 70 new jobs.

Founded in 1923 and headquartered in Virginia, Luck Companies operates through three business units: Luck Stone, Luck Ecosystems, and Luck Real Estate Ventures. The company provides materials and services to the construction, civil engineering, and environmental industries.

“Luck Companies’ decision to expand throughout the state highlights the opportunities and success that can be found in every corner of South Carolina,” Gov. Henry McMaster said. “We celebrate their ongoing investment, job creation, and the positive impact they continue to make in communities across our state.”

Investment in the Midlands

In Saluda County, Luck Companies plans to invest $40 million over the next 10 years, creating 10 jobs as it develops a 330-acre quarry. The Edgefield and Saluda sites will support increased development along the I-20 corridor.

The Fairfield County site, located along Highway 34 near Ridgeway, will provide construction aggregate materials for the growing I-77 corridor and offer space for future economic development. The company will invest about $90 million at this location over the next 20 years to meet growing demand.

Acquired in 2018, the Kershaw County site, located west of Highway 601, produces materials that support road building, site development, and coastal protection. Luck Companies plans to invest an additional $25 million to build a permanent plant there. The Fairfield and Kershaw County sites currently employ more than 30 people.

“The creation of a permanent plant at this location in Kershaw County will support products that are used to build infrastructure, including roads throughout our state, and also protect the environment by limiting coastal erosion,” Kershaw County Council Chairman Ben Connell said.

Expanding Across the State

In Chester County, Luck Companies will invest $93 million to develop a new quarry, creating 25 jobs. The site will also feature acreage for agricultural education and a multi-use economic development component.

In Edgefield County, the company will invest $70 million over the next 20 years to develop a 434-acre quarry, creating 10 new jobs.

The Spartanburg County site, located in Enoree, represents a $132 million investment over the next 20 years, with 25 new jobs expected. The site will also offer opportunities for commercial development.
