Colonel Cullen Jones assumes command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Northwestern Division in a ceremony, today. Lt. Gen. William Graham, Chief of Engineers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers turned command over to Jones during a traditional military assumption-of-command ceremony.
Prior to his arrival in the Northwestern Division, Jones served in the Office of the Chief of Engineers following his tenure as commander of USACE’s New Orleans District. A native of Delaware, Jones was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1999 after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
Jones has held a variety of command and staff positions during his career. He has served at various locations throughout the United States, deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The Northwestern, or “Lewis and Clark,” Division is the largest division in USACE, covering almost one quarter of the land area in the lower 48 states, and employs nearly 5,800 military and civilian employees. It administers five districts based in Kansas City, Missouri; Portland, Oregon; Seattle and Walla Walla, Washington; and Omaha, Nebraska. Its responsibilities include managing the nation’s water resources infrastructure for economic growth and environmental sustainability, timely response to natural disasters, support to military installations and civilian communities throughout the region and strengthening national security.
