GULFPORT, Miss. (WKRG) — The Mississippi State Port Authority has been awarded more than $11 million for “critical infrastructure improvements” at the Port of Gulfport, according to Congressman Mike Ezell (MS-04).
According to a news release from the congressman’s office, the funds come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program and will support the Gulfport Strategic Seaport Infrastructure Improvement Project.
Included in the project are significant rail improvements at the west pier, a new east-west rail connection, upgraded cargo-handling equipment, and infrastructure enhancements.
“This is a major win for Mississippi and for our nation’s supply chain,” Ezell said. “The Port of Gulfport plays a vital role in supporting our economy and our national defense.
“This investment will strengthen its capabilities, improve efficiency, and ensure it remains a critical asset for years to come.”
While the improvements will increase the port’s existing military and commercial operations, they are also expected to attract private investment.
