Port of Gioia Tauro Awards €5 Million Dredging Contract to Dravo

Posted on October 7, 2026

Italy’s Port of Gioia Tauro has awarded a €5m ($5.6m) contract to complete dredging of its port channel while starting the next phase of a shore power programme worth more than €100m.

Spanish contractor Dravo will deepen the south turning basin and the Eranova quay to 17 metres, leaving the wider channel with depths of between 17 and 19 metres. The work is designed to preserve access for containerships of more than 24,000 teu, including vessels longer than 400 metres and wider than 64 metres.

Separately, a consortium of Saet and Suardi has been cleared to begin the first lot of works completing Gioia Tauro’s cold ironing system. Once the broader programme is finished, the port will have 160 MW of shore-power capacity, with nine connections for containerships and one for ro-ro vessels.
