Muskegon spreading the word about dredging equipment to avoid capsize confusion

Posted on April 27, 2026

If you think you see a capsized boat in the Muskegon Harbor Entrance in the next few weeks, do a double-take. It might just be dredging equipment.

King Company, working on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will begin dredging the Muskegon Harbor entrance starting as soon as late April or mid-May.

Once started, the dredging is expected to continue for several weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The City of Muskegon will post more specific dates on social media as the timeline becomes finalized.

Dredging is a routine process that works to excavate sediment, soil, or rock from the harbor to help maintain safe navigation for vessels as they come and go.

This year’s project includes a similar placement of dredged materials as last year.

In the past, the dredged materials were deposited on the beach.

However, last year and again this year, the materials will be placed underwater about a couple of hundred feet off the shoreline, in front of the new restroom building at Pere Marquette and extending south toward the curve.

The material will be discharged in water depths between four and 12 feet, which will allow natural wave action to redistribute it along the shoreline over time.

There’s currently no expected impact to public beach use or city operations, but the city is sharing the information in case beachgoers or residents have questions.

Last year, dispatch received multiple calls from community members who thought the dredging equipment in the harbor was a capsized boat.

To prevent confusion this season, the city has shared photos of the dredging equipment ahead of the process.

“Please help spread the word so others can recognize the equipment. However, please do not hesitate to call 911 in the case of an emergency,” the city said.
