La Crosse County has approved $50,000 for a Lake Onalaska dredging project.
The Lake Onalaska Protection and Rehabilitation District says sediment deposit has picked up on the Mississippi and Lake Onalaska area.
That reduces the amount of deep water habitat for overwintering fish and can restrict boat access.
The county is giving the Lake District $50,000 from a $280,000 pool designated for Lake District projects, per a county resolution. The county has routinely budgeted $100,000 a year for Lake District projects.
The county’s contribution will be added to local fundraising efforts, which are still underway.
A full dredging project is likely to cost several hundred thousand dollars.
