A multimillion-dollar project focused on dredging efforts was slated to begin this week in Lorain Harbor.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the dredging operations are meant to maintain the safety and navigability of the waterway that connects to Lake Erie.
In total, about 45,000 cubic yards of sediment is expected to be removed from Lorain Harbor. The operation — which is tied to $2.5 million in funding — is expected to be completed by October.
In a new release earlier this week, Lt. Col. Aaron Anderson, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District, stated that the dredging activity is important for the economy of Lorain.
“Maintaining the operation of ports like Lorain is a core part of our mission and essential to nearly $37 million in annual economic impact,” Anderson stated. “Our work here does more than just clear a navigation channel — it sustains people’s livelihoods, supports their communities, and powers the regional and national economy.”
In a post to social media Tuesday, the Lorain Port and Finance Authority acknowledge the dredging efforts and how the work will benefit the community.
“Work is underway to keep Lorain Harbor moving,” the Lorain Port and Finance Authority stated. “Dredging begins this week to maintain the federal navigation channel and support safe access for commercial shipping and recreational boating throughout the harbor.”
Tiffany McClelland, executive director of the Lorain Port and Finance Authority, did not immediately respond to a request for additional information Wednesday.
This year’s dredging is expected to remove more sediment than last year’s efforts, which removed about 40,000 cubic yards of material, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
“Lorain Harbor is dredged annually depending on shoaling conditions, funding availability and federal navigation priorities,” the Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District stated.
The sediment that is removed from the waterway is expected to be placed in a local sediment recycling facility for a beneficial reuse, the Army Corps of Engineers said.
Lorain Harbor is a waterway that serves as a generator for economic activity. In August, the Lorain Port and Finance Authority was recognized with a national award that is annually given to ports in the United States that increase their international freight compared to the previous year.
The Army Corps of Engineers said the commercial harbor handled 1 million tons of cargo in 2023, of which about 93 percent was limestone.
“Waterborne transportation facilitated by the harbor supports $27.6 million in business revenue, 103 direct, indirect and induced jobs, and $9.1 million in labor income to the transportation sector,” the Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District stated. “Authorized depths within Lorain Harbor range from 17 to 29 feet, with the shallowest depths in the turning basins and the deepest depths in the entrance channel. The Corps of Engineers maintains these depths to support safe and efficient navigation for large vessels.”
While Lorain Harbor is being dredged over the next few weeks, boaters are encouraged to exercise caution and maintain safe distances when near dredging equipment. The operation is not expected to impede navigation through the harbor.
