Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has secured a $40 million grant from the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) through its Port Infrastructure Development Program to modernise Berth 32 at Blount Island.
The project will involve rebuilding approximately 900 feet of berth, increasing its load-bearing capacity and upgrading infrastructure used for cargo operations.
The funding forms part of a wider $498 million allocation for 35 port infrastructure projects across 19 US states.
Sean P. Duffy, US Transportation Secretary, said: “The strength of our nation’s economy is directly tied to the state of our ports.”
Eric Green, CEO of JAXPORT, stated: “We thank Secretary Duffy, MARAD Administrator Carmel and members of our North Florida Congressional Delegation for this investment in America’s supply chain and the jobs that depend on trade through Florida’s largest container port. Modernizing Berth 32 at Blount Island builds on recent public and private investments to expand our port’s capabilities, strengthen cargo connections serving the Southeast US and Puerto Rico, and enhance our role as a US Strategic Seaport.”
