The partnership focuses on advancing onboard carbon capture and storage technologies.
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and Hanwha Ocean have entered a five-year alliance, aimed at advancing maritime decarbonisation.
This collaboration will focus on alternative low-/zero carbon fuels, energy efficiency technologies, and onboard carbon capture solutions.
Hanwha Ocean, part of Hanwha Group, is dedicated to building a green energy value chain, leveraging the group’s strengths in hydrogen, wind power, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and ammonia.
The company’s commitment to utilising advanced technologies for decarbonisation solutions is evident in its development of ammonia-powered vessels, in collaboration with Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Power Systems.
GCMD has complemented these efforts by successfully conducting ammonia transfer operations, setting the stage for future ammonia bunkering in multiple ports.
The partnership also focuses on the advancement of onboard carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
Hanwha Ocean has received an approval in principle from the Korean Register and the Marshall Islands Registry for its CCS technology for LNG carriers.
Hanwha Ocean CTO Young Chang (James) Shon said: “Hanwha is actively participating in every wave of green innovation, developing advanced technologies to provide carbon-neutral maritime solutions.
“The time for action is now, and we are fully committed to driving meaningful change. Embarking on this journey with GCMD excites us as we work together to realise a carbon-free future for shipping.”
Meanwhile, GCMD’s consortium has released a report on the feasibility of onboard CCS (OCCS) retrofitting, which could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20% with a 10% fuel penalty.
However, challenges such as port readiness, infrastructure, and regulatory clarity need to be addressed for broader OCCS adoption.
Together, GCMD and Hanwha Ocean are committed to supporting the shipping industry in meeting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.
This partnership will synergise GCMD’s efforts in lowering barriers for decarbonisation through pilots and trials with Hanwha Ocean’s innovations in green shipping technologies.
Recently, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Hanwha Ocean reached a broad cooperation agreement to explore various offshore technologies and sustainability efforts.
