Ferrovial, a global infrastructure company, has been awarded a $1.08 billion contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to expand and upgrade a section of the Río Piedras channel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The contract is Ferrovial’s second with USACE under the broader Puerto Nuevo flood control program.
The project will widen the waterway from 80 feet to more than 160 feet, to reduce flood risk in surrounding neighborhoods. Ferrovial’s scope of work includes reinforcing the canal walls using deep concrete pile structures anchored more than 100 feet below ground. The piles will be built on-site and connected with reinforced concrete beams, and select sections will include a double-wall system for added structural stability. The improvements are also designed to prevent erosion and reduce the risk of landslides in areas close to densely populated parts of San Juan.
The Puerto Nuevo flood control program is expected to span approximately six years and generate more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Further upgrades to water flow management and sediment control are also included in the contract’s scope.
