Port of Newport staff say 5,000 cubic yards of material were dredged from Friday, Sept. 15, to Monday, Sept. 18, and work on four of the six remaining berths has yet to begin. The tall dredge can be seen from around the harbor, secured next to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations’ docks. According to a port post on social media, the operation aims to return depths around the docks to the same level as constructed — around 27 feet. Material is brought up from the bottom by vacuum, transferred to a nearby spoils site for processing through three settling ponds. The remaining fill will be certified clean and can be used as a soil amendment and for construction sites.
