DeepOcean managing Nordseecluster offshore wind engineering, cable lay

Posted on August 16, 2023

RWE has designated DeepOcean as a preferred supplier of subsea installation services for the Nordseecluster A offshore wind development.

This comprises four wind farm sites in the eastern part of the German North Sea with a planned power output of 1.6 GW project, generated by a minimum of 104 wind turbines. All four wind farms are due to be operational in early 2029.

Nordseecluster will be constructed in two phases. The N-3.8 and N-3.7 wind farms of Nordseecluster A with a combined capacity of 660 MW are in the permit application phase. The N-3.6 and N-3.5 wind farms for the second phase (Nordseecluster B) will add 900 MW of capacity.

DeepOcean will manage preparatory work, transport and installations of all inter-array cables, including trenching, topside pull-ins and terminations for the initial build-out phase.

In total, the company will install 185 km of 66-kV aluminum and copper cables, starting with connections of all 44 wind turbines of Nordseecluster A.

Its full scope of work covers project management and engineering; offshore preparation including pre-installation cable route survey, route engineering and burial assessment, offshore trenching, boulder relocation, foundation preparatory work and offshore substation preparations; transport and installation of inter-array cables including burial, pull-in, monitoring and testing; and seabed surveys and monitoring.

The company will provide three vessels, one each for installation, trenching and walk to work, with work on Nordseecluster A set to start in 2026.
