Contract awarded, also to Luhr Bros, $6 million IIJA funds towards addt’l Miss River revetment repairs

Posted on September 12, 2022

The Memphis District recently awarded a contract, Aug. 10,  to perform revetment stone repairs at Below Knowlton, near Crumrod, Arkansas, (River Mile 619).

Through this contract, the Corps will partner with Commercial Towing Interests, represented by the Lower Mississippi River Committee (LOMRC), to complete a $6,084,400 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA)-funded project.

Contractor Luhr Bros., Inc. from Columbia, Illinois, will execute the project work, which will consist of the following:

  • Placement of approximately 163,000 tons of Graded Stone C (400-pound maximum stone-size) to repair two bank failures that are approximately 600 and 1,000 feet long.
  • The existing river banks will be paved with a minimum of 4-foot thickness to restore the banks to stable slopes.

The project’s expected start date will be around Oct. 1. The anticipated completion date is set to be mid-November.

To ensure a safe and navigable river, district teams put in long hours every day, completing different types of construction and maintenance, including revetments, dikes, and other river training structures.

“Revetment is placed against the banks of the river at locations where mainline levees are threatened or where unsatisfactory alignment and channel conditions are developing,” Project Manager Zach Cook said. “Revetments assist in stabilizing the riverbanks and maintaining a desirable channel alignment and act as important river infrastructure.”

“This particular project is important because it helps to stabilize the river bank and provide a front line of defense for protection of the Mississippi River and Tributaries federal levee, which is located near top bank of the river,” Cook added.

Congratulations to all members of the Project Delivery Team for meeting this significant project milestone! And many thanks to our partner, Commercial Towing Interests, represented by LOMRC, for their steadfast support throughout the award and execution of this contract.

Finally, thank you to all those who played a role in supporting this especially important project. Without the backing of our partners, dedication and professional work by our river contractors, and every other team member involved, the success of this project would not be possible – and for that, we are beyond grateful.
