After low river levels made getting boats into the Alabama River during Memorial Day weekend difficult, residents took to social media to fight for the city of Selma to make dredging at Selma Marina a higher priority.
Posts on Facebook this week urged the city to spend the $7,500 allocated last summer for silt removal so the river would be more accessible in the 2021 boating season at the city’s main ramp. One boater, Jerry Hatfield, asked residents to give $100 each toward dredging the marina.
“I don’t even own a boat so certainly you don’t have to be a boat owner to kick in,” he said. “Do I have just 74 other people out there who love Selma and want to see her returned to her former glory, at least the Selma, Marina?”
