Dutch marine contractor Van Oord has been selected to dredge millions of cubic metres of sand for Georgia’s first deep water port, on the Black Sea.
The contract from Anaklia Development Consortium pertains to early dredging and reclamation works for Phase 1 of Anaklia Deep Sea Port, Van Oord said Friday (6 July).
The port is intended to encourage economic development by facilitating trade between Asia and Europe.
“This is a historical moment, since Georgia has never witnessed marine works of this kind taking into consideration its scale and engineering solutions that are related to conduct reclamation activities,” said Ronny Solberg, CEO of Anaklia Construction Management team.
Van Oord will deploy the self-propelled cutter suction dredger Athena to dredge 5 million cubic metres of sand.
Anaklia Port is planned to enter into commercial operation in December 2020 and is expected to become one of the largest ports in the Black Sea region with a handling capacity of up to 10,000 TEU vessels, Van Oord said.
