Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The 2023 Engineered Beach Renourishment Project has kicked off in Gulf Shores. Starting on October 30th, the project began along the 900 block of West Beach Boulevard.
The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, LLC started offshore dredging working to bring sand first to the West Beach area in Gulf Shores, and then move eastward. The work will continue non-stop, day and night, until it’s done.
If things go as planned, Orange Beach will see sand renourishment begin in early January. The project is expected to be completed in February 2024, weather permitting.
This effort aims to fix the damage caused by Hurricanes Nate and Sally. The total renourishment project is estimated to move over 2 million cubic yards of sand along five segments of the shoreline from Laguna Key in Gulf Shores, westward to the AL/FL State Line on Perdido Key.
Olsen Associates Inc., the coastal engineering firm responsible for the project, has set up a website to provide updates. The website, found at https://olsen-associates.com/gsob/.
