Weston-super-Mare Marine Lake set to close this week

Weston-super-Mare Marine Lake will close for planned maintenance from Tuesday, July 14 to 9am on Friday, July 17, to allow work on its sluice gates.

The gates control the flow of seawater in and out of the tidal lake, helping to maintain both water levels and quality.

The closure is one of several planned by North Somerset Council over the coming months.

A spokesperson for North Somerset Council said previously: “The gates require frequent checks to make sure that they are operating effectively.

“No dredging will be taking place while the lake is temporarily closed, and we don’t currently have further dredging planned.”

Weston Marine Lake dates back to the 1920s and recently reopened on May 22 after a closure that began last October for improvement works.

That project is believed to have cost around £1 million and was partly funded by North Somerset Council’s successful £20 million government funding bid.

Additional short-term closures are scheduled for September 9 to 9am on September 11, October 12 to 9am on October 14, and November 24 to 9am on November 27.
