John Reinhart, the top executive of the Virginia Port Authority, was inducted Wednesday night into a major trade association’s international maritime hall of fame.
“John has always been a trustworthy, reliable industry icon who has developed long-lasting friendships as he posted outstanding business results,” said Edward J. Kelly, executive director of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey, which began the hall of fame in 1993.
Since the hall of fame was founded 26 years ago, a little more than 100 people have been inducted. They include port leaders in Singapore and labor union officials in the United States.
Reinhart has been executive director and CEO of the Virginia Port Authority since 2014. He came to Virginia after more than 20 years with the shipping company Maersk. He spent several years as CEO of Maersk Line, Limited.
He joins a couple other local Virginia port leaders. J. Robert “Bobby” Bray, a former port director, and Joe Dorto, the former CEO and president of Virginia International Terminals Inc., are past inductees.
Reinhart attended the hall of fame’s dinner Wednesday night at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Manhattan. He was joined by fellow inductee Rodolphe Saade, the chairman of CMA CGM, the French shipping company that is one of the largest in world and has its American headquarters in Norfolk.
Other inductees included Harold Daggett, international president of the International Longshoremen’s Association.
In a statement, Reinhart talked about wanting to continue to grow the port in Hampton Roads.
“Working with such a dedicated team that shares this vision and wants to revolutionize America’s first port is a privilege,” he said. “It all started in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and it is an honor to be recognized and to work to continue that legacy.”
