USACE’s Portland District now commanded by Helton

Col. Michael D. Helton

Posted on August 17, 2020

Col. Michael D. Helton recently took over as commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Portland District. He oversees approximately 1,500 federal employees responsible for serving residents in most of Oregon and southwestern Washington. The district operates locks and dams along the Columbia River, operates dams in the Willamette Valley for flood risk management, and maintains coastal rivers for navigation. Some of the challenges in front of Helton include maintaining aging infrastructure, navigating water-use agreements, leading discussions on the divestment of fish hatcheries, and defining skills and competencies of the future workforce in a telework environment.
