USACE seeks public input on North Topsail Beach shore protection plan

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Wilmington District, is seeking public feedback on a newly released draft environmental study outlining strategies to manage the shore at New River Inlet in North Topsail Beach.

The Draft Environmental Impact Statement, published Sept. 4, addresses the environmental impacts of proposed shore protection activities. The study evaluates five options under the New River Inlet Master Management Plan:

  • Alternative 1 (Status Quo): Continue currently authorized beach and inlet management.
  • Alternative 2 (Abandon and Retreat): No federally authorized beach or inlet management by the Town of North Topsail Beach.
  • Alternative 3: Beach nourishment only.
  • Alternative 4: Beach nourishment and construction of a terminal groin.
  • Alternative 5 (Preferred Strategy): Beach nourishment, terminal groin construction and active inlet management.
