TM ROCO Begins Concrete Works for Antwerp’s Oosterweel Canal Tunnels

Posted on May 18, 2026

A new phase begins at the Oosterweel works in Antwerp. The first concrete has been poured for the floor of the Canal Tunnels (Kanaalzonetunnels) on the Albert Canal. Years of preparation preceded this moment, including the installation of diaphragm walls, the construction pit and excavation works near the iconic Antwerp Port House. Concrete pumps pour the concrete from ground level into the 29‑meter‑deep construction pit.

To mark the start of this new phase, Lantis and TM ROCO – the consortium including DEME – welcomed Annick De Ridder, Flemish Minister for Mobility, Public Works, Ports and Sport, and Antwerp alderman for mobility Koen Kennis to witness the first concrete pour.

Across the Oosterweel sites works are progressing on both the left and right bank of the river Scheldt, from tunnel construction and complex excavation works to major junctions that will reshape mobility around Antwerp.

Once completed, the Canal Tunnels will form a key connection in closing the Antwerp Ring, contributing to a smoother traffic flow around the city.
