SJM subsidiary awarded with new 5-year dredging contract

Posted on January 2, 2023

Macau Dredging Services Limited, a subsidiary wholly owned by gaming operator SJM Resorts, will continue to provide dredging and maintenance services of Macau’s public waterways and harbour basins after being awarded with a new 5-year contract taking effect on January 1, 2023, the company has announced on Thursday.

Macau Dredging “will provide services in the areas designated by the government to meet annual dredging volume requirements,” in accordance with the contract signed with the SAR Government.

Macau Dredging says it currently owns 27 dredgers, barges, tugboats and auxiliary vessels, and employs more than 160 dredging specialists.

“The successful bid is a further confirmation of SJM’s commitment to supporting Macau’s sustainable development. We are very pleased to continue to undertake this important task and make positive contributions to Macau’s economic and urban development,” said  Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM, as quoted in a statement.

SJM’s parent company and predecessor as gaming concessionaire before 2002, STDM, was in charge of the dredging work since the 1960s as a part of the gaming concession terms. The same provision was included in the 2002 concession contract with SJM. STDM continued to provide the service directly and in 2013 the responsibility for keeping the city’s waterways navigable was transferred to Macau Dredging Services Ltd. – a wholly owned subsidiary of SJM.

The new 10-year gaming concession contract awarded to SJM, which will take effect on January 1, 2023, does not include dredging and maintenance as required services to be provided by SJM.

In August 2022, the Macau SAR Government launched a public tender for the dredging services in August 2022, which was won by Macau Dredging.

The new agreement is effective January 1, 2023, and will last for five years until December 31, 2027.
