Rotterdam Launches Worldwide Port Innovation Programme

The Port of Rotterdam has announced it has joined an initiative with other major port authorities around the world to ensure ports remain dynamic, competitive and at the forefront of social and technological innovation.

Rotterdam joined the port authorities of New York, New Jersey, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Busan, Singapore, Barcelona, Riga, Le Havre, Trieste and Hamburg to kick-off the Human Port Capital on January 28, 2018.

The ultimate aim of the scheme is to establish a joint Human Capital Ports Action Programme which will see ports work closely alongside educational institutions and government authorities on the issue of social innovation.

Port of Rotterdam’s CEO Allard Castelein, said this: “The challenges of the energy transition and digitization can only be met if we also focus on the social transition.

“By working together and sharing knowledge and experience in this area with other international port authorities in the Human Port Capital initiative, we are creating a new generation of port employees. Ultimately, it’s the people who make the difference.”

It is the latest initiative the Port of Rotterdam has launched or participated in to make port operations more efficient and sustainable.

On January 11, 2019, PTI covered a profile of the port’s AI vessel platform which is designed to utilize data and monitor traffic.

Furthermore, on January 22, 2019, it kick-started a plan to reduce CO2 emissions in its daily operations and the wider maritime industry.
