The appointment follows a selection process that took place over the past few weeks. During this process, numerous candidates were evaluated by a selection committee composed of members of the Board of Directors. Ultimately, Rob Smeets emerged as the strongest candidate.
Rob Smeets is no stranger to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. He has worked for the Port Authority for nearly twenty years and has held various senior positions there. Since 2014, he headed the Towing Company; in 2017, he became Nautical Operations Director, and since 2019, he has been a member of the Executive Committee as Chief Operations Officer (COO). Since the announcement of Jacques Vandermeiren’s departure, he has assumed the role of interim CEO.
With his extensive experience within the organization, his thorough knowledge of the port and its operations, and his familiarity with the broad stakeholder environment, Rob Smeets possesses a strong foundation to lead Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The Board of Directors is convinced that he can guide the Port Authority during a period characterized by significant investments, a changing geopolitical context, and challenges for European industry.

In addition, he has extensive experience in managing large budgets, investment programs, and change processes. In a period where realization and execution are central, we are convinced that Rob, with his pragmatic leadership style, is the right person to lead Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

Based on his experience, knowledge of the port, and leadership qualities, Rob emerged from that process as the strongest candidate. I have every confidence that Rob, together with the Executive Board, the management team, the organization, and our customers , will make our port even stronger and prepare it for a challenging future.
