Race shaping up for Coastal Bend’s newest oil export terminal

Posted on May 29, 2019

The Port of Corpus Christi is dredging the ship channel in hopes of building a terminal to load supertankers at Harbor Island.

But the port isn’t the only player in a game which would mean billions to the winner.

There’s a race to build an oil export terminal in the Coastal Bend.

These terminals load very large crude carriers or VLCC’s. These are ships capable of carrying 2 million barrels of oil.

The port wants to build a terminal on Harbor Island but a company called Trafigura proposed an offshore terminal in Kleberg County waters.

And there are other interested parties as well.

So is this a winner take all race? Or is there enough business to go around?

We’ll have more this evening on KRIS 6 News.

The Army Corps of Engineers recently asked the port for an environmental impact statement for its proposed 75-foot dredging project.

Port CEO Sean Strawbridge says that will not delay the dredging.
