The Port of Tallinn will pilot an automated beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone system, using dock-based infrastructure at Muuga harbour, Estonia’s main cargo port.
The port is exploring the technology with a view to providing continuous situational awareness without the need for on-site operators; faster response times in security, inspection and operational scenarios; and scalable monitoring across large and complex port environments.
The port said in a LinkedIn post that the operation has been designed with a safety- and compliance-first approach. “The Port of Muuga is an ideal real-life testbed for evaluating emerging technologies in a real operational environment. As our CIO, Priit Koppel, puts it: “Piloting automated drone solutions allows us to validate emerging technologies, build practical experience and identify the use cases that truly create value, while ensuring their seamless integration into the port’s digital ecosystem.”
Muuga is located 17km from the capital Tallinn. The pilot is expected to last several months.
