Port of Baltimore Acquires 17 Acres Near Key Cargo Terminals to Support Future Growth

Posted on June 24, 2026

The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) has acquired more than 17 acres of industrial property near the Port of Baltimore’s Dundalk and Seagirt marine terminals, positioning the port for future expansion, business growth and job creation.

The agency paid $6 million for adjacent properties at 2400 Edgewater Ave. and 2701 Broening Highway, located across from the Dundalk and Seagirt terminals. The transaction closed April 27, according to port officials.

“As we look to continue growing and expanding the port, future considerations and use of this property will become part of our new master vision plan, which will drive the Maryland Port Administration to help fulfill its mission of increasing business and generating jobs for the port,” MPA spokesman Richard Scher said in a statement.

The acquisition aligns with the port’s long-term strategic planning efforts as officials develop a 20-year master vision plan focused on expanding cargo operations, increasing business lines and strengthening the port’s economic impact across Maryland.

The Port of Baltimore supports approximately 20,300 direct jobs and generates more than $70 billion in annual economic activity statewide.

Dundalk Marine Terminal, the port’s largest general cargo facility, handles containers, automobiles, agricultural and construction equipment, and other cargo. Seagirt Marine Terminal, operated by Ports America Chesapeake, has the capacity to process up to 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually.

State property records identify the seller as Le Petomane XXIII Inc. The acquisition was first reported by the Baltimore Business Journal.

The purchase comes as the Port of Baltimore continues its recovery and growth following the 2024 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which temporarily disrupted shipping operations after the container ship Dali struck a support pier.

Despite the setback, the port reported one of its strongest years on record in 2025, handling 50 million tons of cargo across public and private marine terminals. Officials also reported record container volumes and $65.6 billion in foreign cargo value, ranking Baltimore 10th nationally among U.S. ports.

The port handled approximately 728,000 cars and light trucks last year, the second-highest volume among U.S. ports, and led the nation in roll-on/roll-off farm and construction equipment shipments, totaling more than 887,000 tons.

Port leaders have identified container growth at Seagirt and Tradepoint Atlantic, along with expanded roll-on/roll-off, bulk cargo and cruise operations, as key priorities in the developing master plan.

The land acquisition follows another major infrastructure milestone for the port. State officials, CSX Transportation and Gov. Wes Moore recently celebrated the reopening of the Howard Street Tunnel, which now accommodates double-stack container trains. The modernization project is expected to increase rail capacity by approximately 160,000 containers annually.
