Over 6.1 million cubic meters of dredged material from the Lach Huyen channel were dumped into the sea

Posted on August 17, 2026

HHIT port welcomes container ships with a deadweight tonnage of up to 214,000 DWT.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just decided to allow the Vietnam Maritime Administration to dump more than 6.1 million cubic meters of dredged material from the Hai Phong maritime channel maintenance dredging project (Lach Huyen section) to be carried out in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Specifically, the dredging project for the Lạch Huyện section of the Hai Phong maritime channel covers a length of approximately 20.6 km, starting from buoy number “0” to the turning basin in front of piers 1 and 2 of the Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal (TC-HICT). The dredging will ensure a channel bottom width of 160 m; a turning basin width of 660 m in front of piers 1 and 2; and a channel bottom depth of -13.5 m (according to nautical chart system).

The total volume of dredging for the TC-HICT port channel and turning basin is estimated at approximately 6,111,802 m³. Of this, 1,989,350  will be dredged in 2026; 2,061,226  in 2027; and 2,061,226  in 2028.

Dredging the Lạch Huyện channel will help large container ships access Hải Phòng seaport more conveniently and safely.

All dredged material from the project will be dumped at an area of approximately 213.42 hectares located in Zone D1 of Hai Phong City. The nearest boundary of the dumping site to buoy number “0” in the Lach Huyen channel is approximately 4.6 km. This location was approved by the Hai Phong City People’s Committee in document No. 1571/UBND-MT dated June 23, 2025.

The Hai Phong maritime channel (Lach Huyen section) was handed over and put into operation in August 2018, as part of the Hai Phong International Gateway Port Construction Investment Project. This waterway plays a crucial role for seaports and inland ports, becoming a vital waterway transportation hub and an important gateway for trade in Vietnam’s relations with the region and the world .

The Lach Huyen section of the Hai Phong maritime channel serves large vessels entering the Lach Huyen port area. Currently, the ports here can accommodate vessels with a deadweight tonnage of up to 176,000 DWT (reduced load) and proposals are being made to be able to accommodate vessels with a deadweight tonnage of up to 200,000 DWT (reduced load).

The volume of goods and vessels passing through the Hai Phong maritime channel in general, and the Lach Huyen section in particular, has grown rapidly. Specifically, at TC-HICT port, in 2021 there were 709 vessel calls, with vessels reaching a deadweight tonnage of up to 132,550 DWT. By 2024, the number of vessel calls increased to 962, with vessels reaching a deadweight tonnage of up to 144,571 DWT. Last July, TC-HICT port welcomed a vessel with a deadweight tonnage of over 165,000 DWT for cargo handling.

Meanwhile, from April 2025, berths 3-4 of HTIT port, with a berth length of 750 m, and berths 5-6 of HHIT port, with a berth length of 900 m, will officially come into operation, contributing to a continuous increase in cargo throughput in the port area.

Notably, HHIT port recently welcomed a 214,000 DWT vessel that had just finished loading/unloading cargo.
