Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the dredging of the Gumain River following the collapse of a dike in Lubao, Pampanga.
Dizon on Sunday inspected the dike that collapsed in Barangay Sto. Cristo.
He was accompanied by Pampanga Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda, Vice Governor Delta Pineda, at Lubao Mayor Esmie Pineda.
The dike in the barangay collapsed due to the strong water current from the overflowing water in Gumain River and Santo Cristo Dam, the DPWH said.
“Iniutos na ni Secretary Dizon ang pagpapalalim ng Gumain River para mapabilis ang daloy ng tubig patungong Pasig-Potrero River at ang paglilinis ng mga basura at bumarang troso sa nasabing dam, habang tiniyak ng Kalihim na popondohan ang pagsasaayos ng nasirang dike, pati na rin ang nakitang uka sa 600-metro na bahagi ng flood mitigation structure,” the department said in a statement.
(Secretary Dizon has ordered the dredging of the Gumain River to speed up the water flow toward the Pasig-Potrero River, as well as the clearing of garbage and clogged logs at the dam, while assuring that the repairs for the damaged dike and the eroded 600-meter section of the flood mitigation structure will be funded.)
The continuous heavy rains on Saturday triggered flooding not in the National Capital Region and other parts of Luzon.
Monsoon rains are expected to continue over Luzon on Sunday, the state weather bureau PAGASA said.
In its 4 a.m. public weather forecast, PAGASA said monsoon rains are expected in Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga.
