SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — King tides and offshore winds continue to affect the Brevard County coastline, with some of the most visible erosion reported in the Satellite Beach area.
Strong wind and waves have cut into the dune line, carving away large amounts of sand. Officials said that recent sand renourishment projects have helped protect sea grapes and other vegetation along the coast.
The impacts are being felt across the Space Coast after several days of king tides combined with offshore winds. Beach crossovers remain closed after sand was ripped out from underneath them.
“I’ve never seen it like this,” said Clayton Alsapt, who said he has lived in the area for 50 years and is concerned about the erosion.
“This is rough. You don’t see (any) surfers out there,” Alsapt said.
In Indialantic, Amanda Garay, assistant manager at Windemere by the Sea bed and breakfast, said she has been checking the beach daily to monitor the conditions.
“I could see how close it’s coming up to our beach access,” Garay said.
Garay said she has been watching the tides and erosion closely, hoping the property’s pergola used for weddings and events is not damaged.
“The beach restoration is very pivotal to the ocean,” she said.
Officials urged beachgoers to be safe and stay out of the water until the weather event passes, which is expected sometime Thursday.
