SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The first phase of the Phillippi Creek Dredge Project has reached substantial completion, Sarasota County officials said.

The high-spot dredging project removed more than 60,000 cubic yards of sediment from the creek. The work focused on areas of sediment buildup between South Tuttle Avenue and South Beneva Road.

Ben Quartermaine, Sarasota County’s stormwater director, said the project targeted high spots along the creek to improve stormwater conveyance.

“The added benefit of water quality as it relates to the bay is something that is a big win for this phase one of the project,” Quartermaine said.

According to Quartermaine, the material removed from the creek included naturally occurring organics. He said crews removed approximately 225,000 pounds of phosphorus and approximately 44,000 pounds of nitrogen as part of the work.
