ERDC names new Geotechnical Structures Laboratory director

VICKSBURG, Miss.—Nick Boone has been selected to serve as the director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL).

As Director of GSL, he will be responsible for leading and executing broad research, development, technology and program management in the areas of science and engineering related to force protection and civil works. In this role, he will provide overall guidance and policy direction for the laboratory’s mission and operations. He will also serve as the ERDC lead for Military Engineering.

“I am incredibly humbled and honored to be selected to lead this high-impact organization,” said Boone. “GSL has been my home for my entire professional career, and I’m blessed to continue working with such an exceptional team.”

Before his selection, Boone was a Senior Scientific Technical Manager (SSTM) and served as the Technical Director for Force Projection and Maneuver Support for Military Engineering Research and Development (R&D), addressing challenges with force projection, mobility, bridge assessment and repair, gap crossings, airfields and pavements and beach crossings, among others. Prior to becoming Technical Director, he served as principal investigator and program manager in the Survivability Engineering Branch as a subject-matter expert for fortifications, protective structures and weapons’ effects on structures.

Boone earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Louisiana Tech University and his master’s degree in civil engineering from Mississippi State University. He has also received numerous awards and commendations from the Army for Civilian Service, Program Development, R&D Achievement, Technology Transfer and the Bronze Order of De Fleury Medal.
