Dredging and beach placement at Florida’s Sebastian Inlet District to commence in January

Sebastian Inlet District's 2023 Truck Sand Haul Project

Posted on January 2, 2025

A project to place sand along a 2.5-mile (four-kilometre) stretch of beach south of Florida’s Sebastian Inlet is scheduled to begin during the week of Monday, January 6, the Sebastian Inlet District said recently.

The plans call for hydraulically dredging approximately 215,000 cubic yards (164,000 cubic metres) of beach-compatible sand from a designated sand trap and adjacent navigation channel located within Sebastian Inlet. The extracted sand will be placed on the downdrift beaches.

In addition, crews will place approximately 80,000 cubic yards (61,000 cubic metres) of additional beach-compatible sand that will be trucked in from an upland sand source.

The contractor, ATL Diversified of West Palm Beach, Florida, anticipates that the project will be completed by April 30, 2025.

The project is necessary for the Sebastian Inlet District to meet its requirement to bypass sand that migrates into the inlet system to downdrift beaches per the Florida Beach and Shore Preservation Act.

Project updates will be posted on the Sebastian Inlet District’s projects page.
