Desilting work begins in dam soon after bypoll results

The much awaited dredging work on the Srivaikuntam tank in Tuticorin district has commenced, as per an order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in June this year. Farmers of the region considered it a gift from chief minister J Jayalalithaa to mark her victory in the bypoll.

Tuticorin MDMK district secretary S Joel had filed a petition seeking that the dam, which was constructed in 1873, be desilted immediately as livelihood of thousands of farmers depended on it. On June 5 this year, the NGT directed the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to consider the proposal of the state government to desilt the tank.
