Earlier this year, together with Van Oord, we prepared the cutter suction dredger Ajax for a new phase. Following the successful completion of her first project, Ajax has been further upgraded for her next challenge: ViA15.
Over the past period, several onboard systems have been modified and modernised. The hydraulic container has been upgraded with new piping, valves and connections, a generator set has been installed in the booster station, and various deck and piping systems have been adapted to meet the requirements of the new project.
One of the most interesting upgrades, however, took place behind the scenes. Together with MSA, the automation system has been upgraded with new hardware and software, including slack-wire detection. This also lays the foundation for further automation, such as automatic ladder control for dredging predefined slope profiles.
The spare parts package has also been expanded, including a new cutter head and a spare hydraulic pump, ensuring that Ajax is well prepared for her new project.
The final connections and modification works have now been completed.
Ajax is ready for her next destination: ViA15!
A great example of how an existing cutter suction dredger can be prepared for an entirely new challenge through smart engineering, modern automation and targeted upgrades.
