Beach Renourishment Project Prepares to Move South Next Week in Flagler Beach

Posted on August 14, 2024

The Flagler County, FL Coastal Storm Risk Management Project in Flagler Beach is quickly advancing to the north and nearing beach fill operations around the Flagler Beach Pier. Once all areas south of the pier have been completed, the contractor Weeks Marine, Inc. will need to relocate equipment north of the pier for beach fill to North 7th Street. As such, a small portion of State Road A1A will be temporarily closed with detours for approximately 2 to 4 hours beginning early morning August 19th or August 20th weather pending. In preparation, a portion of the boardwalk east of A1A will be removed, and a temporary sand ramp from the beach up to A1A just north of S 6th Street will be built for equipment access.

Once the portion of A1A between S 7th Street and N 2nd Street is closed, a large yellow tracked machine will traverse the sand ramp and travel on ground protection mats placed on the surface of State Road A1A. The machine will travel north on A1A to the beach access ramp at the corner of Moody Blvd (SR100) and A1A, where it will access the beach. Once the machine and other equipment is on the beach, ground mats removed and debris removed, A1A will be reopened to traffic. The sand ramp will remain, and the boardwalk will not be replaced until the equipment is moved back on to the southern part of the beach for demobilization.

The Jacksonville District, Flagler County as the non-Federal sponsor, FDOT and the city of Flagler Beach have worked tirelessly to ensure the beach nourishment is completed ahead of the mid-October deadline to start pier rehabilitation efforts. The constructed beach and dune system will serve as the first line of defense from future storm events and sea level rise. Each of these projects are constructed to sacrifice themselves with loss of sand to protect upland infrastructure including residential, commercial, State Road A1A and various critical public facilities within the community. Other significant benefits include recreational beach opportunities for residents and tourists along with critical nesting habitat for sea turtles and shorebirds.”
