Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. has announced that the dredges Ellis Island and Liberty Island have made significant progress over this past week. As of Aug. 10, over 90 percent of the total contract volume (1.2 million cubic yards of sand) has been placed in the Buxton beach nourishment project area, and the project is expected to be completed next week.
The dredge Ellis Island left the job site on the evening of Aug. 9 to head to Norfolk after working in Buxton for six days.
The dredge Liberty Island will alternately pump through the two sublines and finish the rest of the contract volume for the project.
Kitty Hawk: On Aug. 14 weather permitting, Weeks Marine is planning to install the third subline in Kitty Hawk, located near Maynard Street. While the subline is being installed, the surrounding beach will be closed and will re-open once the subline is installed.
On Aug. 15, the dredge is expected to return and sand pumping will begin on Aug. 16. Pumping will start at the White Street subline and work will move in a southern direction to join with the Kill Devil Hills project.
When sand pumping begins, the work area will be closed to the public. Whenever possible, the contractor will provide access for beach goers to walk behind and around the active construction area.
