Sarasota County has temporarily closed the beach portion of Brohard Paw Park as construction continues on the Venice Beach Renourishment Project.
The closure is intended to protect visitors and their dogs as construction equipment and vehicles move through the area, Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources said. The fenced dog park area near South Harbor Drive remains open for public use.
The beach area is expected to reopen approximately next week, after construction activities have moved from the area and officials determine it is safe for visitors and dogs to return.
The City of Venice and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began renourishing sections of Venice Beach in late May. The work stretches from the South Jetties to an area just past the public fishing pier.
Crews have pumped 58,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beach from a borrow site about 11 miles offshore. Active construction zones and portions of parking areas may be closed during the project to provide space for crews and heavy equipment.
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has monitored and relocated sea turtle nests during the work. More than 450 nests had been relocated as of a previous report.
