Arong River dredging work to address water scarcity in Wangkhem: MPCC president K Meghachandra

Posted on December 19, 2022

Wangkhem MLA and MPCC president K Meghachandra said that dredging of Arong river flowing through Charangpat will soon be taken up to address water scarcity faced by the people of Wangkhem.

The Arong river dredging work will be carried out with funds from the MLA Local Area Development Fund, MGNREGA Fund, Water Resources fund and PHED, Meghachandra said while speaking to the media on the sidelines of a meeting attended by DC Thoubal, A Subhash Singh, Lilong CD Block, BDO, PHED, Water Resources, officials and members of local clubs.

The locals of Charangpat have been facing acute water shortage even with three water supplies in the area, namely Charangpat Mamang Leikai water supply scheme, Charangpat Mayai Leikai water supply scheme and Charangpat Maning Leikai Water Supply Scheme, he said.

Arong river is the sole water source of the water supply units but the deteriorating condition of the river fails to provide water, he added.

Meghachandra also stated that Rs 25 lakh from the Water Resources Department has been sanctioned but it won’t be sufficient for the 3.8 km long river channel. He appealed to the locals to cooperate in the developmental process to be completed before the rainy season.

Moreover, a dam will be constructed near the water source, he said, urging illegal encroachers on the river banks to move out.

DC Thoubal A Subhash also called for people’s cooperation in the process and reminded the locals of their previous eviction process carried out by the authorities concerned.
