Kazakhstan has started major dredging works at the Port of Aktau on the Caspian Sea, with around 1.3m cu m of material to be removed as falling water levels constrain navigation.
The project will deepen the port basin to 6–7 metres and is due for completion by the end of the year.
Kazakhstan’s transport ministry said the works are expected to increase Aktau’s throughput capacity and support up to 30% growth in cargo volumes on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, while reducing the cost of the maritime leg by an estimated 10–15%.
The dredging is also intended to maintain safe navigation and support further investment in the port.
