AECOM To Work On Port Of Rotterdam Terminal Expansion

Posted on October 9, 2024

Infrastructure consulting firm AECOM has been appointed to provide project and construction management services for the Port of Rotterdam’s expansion project in the Netherlands.

APM Terminals (APMT) has appointed AECOM to support the Maasvlakte II expansion (MVII-E) project, aimed at extending the existing fully automated container terminal’s capacity by some 2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit – the standard size for a shipping container).

This new section of the terminal will strengthen the port’s position as a logistics hub and a world-class industrial complex in terms of both size and quality.

AECOM will provide comprehensive project management services for the client, overseeing the coordination of ground and civil works, crane installation and the development of the surrounding infrastructure during the expansion, with a focus on safety, health and environment management.

In addition, the firm will supervise the refurbishment of the port’s control hub to accommodate extensions being made to the 51-hectare container terminal as resident engineer under the FIDIC contract.

“We are delighted to have been selected for this project, which is a testament to AECOM’s talented local team, our international ports experience and our commitment to building strong client relationships,” said Duarte Catarino, managing director Benelux and France at AECOM.

“The Port of Rotterdam is a crucial hub for many industries across Europe and will play a key role in enabling the energy transition across the continent.

“With our considerable expertise in delivering infrastructure driving the push to net zero, we are proud to play a part in helping to deliver a fully automated, zero-emission expansion to the terminal, which is set to enable shore power – providing charging to ships – by the end of the year.”

This appointment is the first port project of its kind for AECOM in the Netherlands, though the firm has completed similar projects across the world, most notably the Tema Port Expansion in Accra, Ghana.

It builds on several key projects delivered by AECOM’s Benelux team in recent years, including the YVIE complex, Europe’s largest hotel conference centre, in Amsterdam, and the Star Container Services depot within the Port of Rotterdam, for which AECOM provided the APMT with strategic, technical and commercial advice for their container handling, monitoring, storage, supply and repair services.
