Twelve bodies have been recovered during dredging of Bhakra Nangal canal in Narwana area of Jind district in Haryana.
A section of the Bhakra Nangal canal that runs through Narwana was closed for dredging. While cleaning the river bed, bodies were recovered, one after the other, sending shockwaves across the state.
Police suspect that more bodies could be recovered from the Bhakra Nangal canal.
BODIES ARE MONTHS’ OLD
On Saturday, the Narwana section of the Bhakra Nangal canal was closed for dredging when a group of divers started recovering the bodies.
According to leader of the divers’ group Aashu Malik, the bodies recovered so far from the Bhakra Nangal canal are 1-10 month old.
As the news of bodies being recovered from the canal spread, people of nearby villages reached the spot to identify the deceased.
Of the bodies recovered so far, one has been identified as that of Satnam Singh, who is believed to be a resident of Samana in Punjab.
PUNJAB POLICE TO VISIT SITE
Diver Aashu Malik said that often bodies would flow in to the Bhakra Nangal canal from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
The canal runs through Nangal, Una, Talwara, Nalagarh, Anandpur Sahib, Kiratpur, Bharatgarh, Ropar, Morinda, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sarhind, Samana, Ghagga, Khanauri, and Narwana to finally enter Hisar.
A team of divers is searching the Bhakra Nangal canal even as the police in Narwana are trying to identify the deceased. A police team from neighbouring Punjab has started for Narwana.
