A dredge is anchored in Wells and ready to do its part rebuilding southern Maine’s coastline.

The dredge was assembled at Portland Yacht Services on Portland Harbor.

York County bought the Ellicott dredge using federal money to replenish beaches after the devastating winter storms.

A tugboat will be used to tow it from beach to beach along coastal York County.

The hope is more communities will be inspired to do the same and restore their beaches.

“Now they’ve built it, now it’s put here, they, people will come, meaning that people, other communities will come forward and protect their shoreline and it will just become a routine,” Kevin Roch from Save our Shores said.

“We’re excited to see it in the water and get here down to Wells Harbor and finishing up this work and getting this thing going by November, which is typically the start of the dredge season,” York County Manager Greg Zinser said.

The dredge is expected to stay in Wells until the county can assemble a crew for the start of that season.
