Wrightsville Beach CSRM renourishment work begins this week

Posted on December 6, 2023

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Work is set to begin on the coastal storm risk management (CSRM) renourishment at Wrightsville Beach this week.

Starting this week, expect to see commercial vessels and marine equipment in Banks Channel, towards the south end of the beach, and into Masonboro Inlet. The contractor will begin stringing pipe in the water in Masonboro Inlet and vicinity at this time. The pipe will remain in the water and run north to the placement area which begins just south of the Blockade Runner Hotel. The contractor will initially land their pipe on the beach in the vicinity of the Blockade Runner Hotel and work their way north. The pipe will be marked in the water and on the beach, please exercise extreme caution when in these areas. Dredging in Masonboro Inlet and Beach Placement is expected to begin the week of December 17th.

Below is the information you will need to know when navigating which parts of the beach will be open or closed.

We have a sand placement tracker that will let people know which part of the beach is currently closed for construction. Click here for the tracker. Please view in google chrome.

  • All schedules are estimated and subject to change due to unforeseen complications (weather, mechanical issues, etc.).
  • Do not enter construction areas (these areas will be fenced-in with orange fencing and signs).
  • When having to cross over the pipe, only do so at areas where the sand has been piled up over pipe to create a safe crossing ramp – do not stand or sit on the pipe anywhere.
  • Keep a safe distance from all heavy equipment.
  • Keep a safe distance from the discharging end of the pipe.
  • Read and follow signs and instructions given by Contractor Personnel.
  • Sand placement is expected to begin the week of December 17th

The benefits of this CSRM project include protection from erosion and other effects from coastal storms.  The project provides economic benefits by protecting private property, and ensuring beaches are primed for tourism and recreation. We are thankful for the full support of our partners and the local beach towns.
