Work to reroute the mouth of a river that feeds into Lake Superior began Monday.

Marquette engineer officials said the city is moving a significant amount of sand at the mouth of the Dead River. The river feeds into Lake Superior next to the Upper Harbor Ore Dock.

Right now, the mouth takes a detour. City engineers said it leads to a buildup of sand sediment in the ore dock and makes it difficult for people to use the ADA boat launch.

“It is a great opportunity to beneficially use some of that sand that is clogging up the mouth of the dead river that is impeding shipping and to restore shorelines basically,” Marquette City Engineer Mikael Kilpela said.
