West Grand Terre Surveys Show Encouraging Signs Following Barrier Island Restoration

Posted on October 21, 2026

CPRA’s commitment to Louisiana’s coast doesn’t end when construction is complete.

Recently, crews conducted monitoring surveys at the West Grand Terre Restoration Project to evaluate how the restored barrier island is performing.

Completed in July 2022, the project restored 295 acres of beach and dune habitat and 144 acres of back barrier marsh. A rock revetment was also constructed to protect the restored marsh and reduce erosion along the shoreline.

Crews from CPRA’s Thibodaux and New Orleans offices recently collected vegetation and elevation data to compare current conditions with baseline data gathered in fall 2024. Early observations are promising, with successful dune plantings and better-than-expected vegetation growth along the beach.

From planning and construction to long-term monitoring, CPRA remains committed to seeing projects through and ensuring restoration efforts continue to benefit Louisiana’s coast for years to come.
