WEDA Presented Four Safety Excellence Awards at its July Dredging Summit & Expo

Posted on August 4, 2023

The WEDA Safety Commission was honored to present four Safety Excellence Awards this year:

  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Company: Manson Construction Co.
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Project: Sevenson Environmental Services Inc., Pledger Creek Remediation Project
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Trade Partner: Anchor QEA, LLC
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Stakeholder: Port of Houston

Below are some additional details on the award winners and their commitment to safety.

In Manson’s mature safe work system, “no injury is acceptable, and safety is not optional” is lived by all. Manson has been a good-faith partner, sharing numerous safety innovations and best practices with WEDA, including their version of the Significant Injury or Fatality (SIF) program, Communicate the Concern Card, and many others with our community.

Sevenson Environmental Services cited communication – early, often, and throughout the process – as a primary key to success on their Pledger Creek Remediation project.  Along with implementing 3-day weekends twice a month to combat fatigue, Sevenson implemented numerous safety efforts to combat the continuously fluctuating high-hazard conditions and maintain zero recordables on their project.

Safety has been a core value as shown in Anchor QEA’s waterfront redevelopment, sediment remediation, and navigation dredging services since 1998. Over the years, the company’s Health and Safety processes have evolved, matured, and become fully embedded into their culture.

As strategic leader for the Houston Ship Channel, the Port Houston Authority (PHA) is pivotal for the City’s development in international trade. In 2012, PHA launched an organizational strategy to establish the Port’s first sustainable safety program. Over several years, PHA successfully implemented incident analysis, risk assessments, and safety training to support the Port’s SMS framework for document management and improvement, leading to positive KPI metrics.

WEDA and the Safety Commission were pleased to present awards to Manson, Sevenson, Anchor QEA, and Port of Houston for their outstanding contributions to the dredging industry in the name of safety.
