Canada has moved the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) project another step towards potential national-interest status under the Building Canada Act.
The federal government on August 28 announced publication of a formal Canada Gazette notice considering RBT2 for inclusion on Schedule 1 of the Act, a required step before cabinet can decide whether to designate the development as a project of national interest.
The proposed three-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank in British Columbia would increase Port of Vancouver container capacity by around 50%. The project completed its federal impact assessment in 2023 and is working through the remaining permits required before construction can begin.
A national-interest designation would allow remaining federal approvals to be coordinated through a more streamlined process, providing greater certainty around permitting and project delivery.
Public comments on the proposed designation are open until October 1. The government stressed that publication of the notice does not itself constitute approval for RBT2 to be listed under the Act.
