Offshore wind didn’t invent specialized subsea rock installation. It gave a 50-year-old offshore technology another major market.
Van Oord‘s Bravenes is a good example.
The 154-meter DP3 vessel is designed to place rock with high precision around pipelines, cables, offshore structures, and wind foundations. Using a flexible fallpipe and ROV-controlled placement system, it can put material exactly where it’s needed hundreds of meters below the vessel.
That’s much more than an offshore wind vessel.
It’s a subsea infrastructure platform.
Van Oord has been developing subsea rock installation capability since the 1970s. Oil and gas pipelines were an early market. Subsea cables and other offshore infrastructure followed. Offshore wind added another major application, particularly for scour protection around foundations and protection of subsea cables.
Now Van Oord is doubling down.
Last year, the company ordered two next-generation subsea rock installation vessels, with the first expected in 2028 and the second in 2029. Van Oord specifically pointed to growing global demand for the protection of offshore energy infrastructure.
That’s the part marine contractors should pay attention to.
Specialized equipment doesn’t necessarily belong to one industry.
It belongs to a problem.
In this case: accurately placing large quantities of material on the seabed in deep water, high currents, and rough seas.
Pipelines need it.
Subsea cables need it.
Offshore wind needs it.
Other offshore energy infrastructure needs it.
That’s what makes specialized marine equipment interesting from an investment standpoint. You’re not necessarily betting on one market. You’re investing in a technical capability that several markets need.
And when one market slows, that versatility gives the asset somewhere else to work.
